How to Revise GCSE Science Required Practicals
What examiners ask about required practicals and how to revise methods, variables, risks and results so you can answer any practical question.
Why practicals matter
Each exam board lists practicals you must carry out during the course, and exam papers include questions on them. You may be asked to write a method, identify variables, process results, or suggest improvements.
Learn the variables
For every practical, know the independent variable (what you change), the dependent variable (what you measure) and the control variables (what you keep the same). This alone answers many questions.
Know the method as steps
Learn each method as a short numbered list. Include equipment, quantities where relevant, what you measure, and that you repeat readings and calculate a mean.
Accuracy, precision and errors
Be ready to explain how to make results more accurate (for example using a more precise instrument) and to spot anomalous results. Know the difference between random and systematic errors.
Practise the maths
Practical questions often include drawing or reading graphs, calculating means and rates, and working with units. Practise these with real exam-style data.
